The primary survey is an examination of the emergency scene and the ill or injured person for life-threatening conditions. It consists of three basics steps to follow in any emergency : Check, Call, Care.

Check the scene
Check the person
- If it safe, check the person - Ask the person if they want help - Check the person's ABC: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.
Call : If the person is respones, determine whether these is any need to call EMS/9-1-1.
If the person is unresponsive, have someone call EMS/9-1-1 and get an AED if available.
Care : Care for life-threatening conditions first.
